NLC hosts education workshop in Kareedouw to explain lottery regulation
Participants were briefed on key aspects of the lottery funding cycle, including the online grant application process, compliance criteria and the role of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) hosted an education and awareness workshop at Kagiso Community Hall in Kareedouw to inform civil society about the regulator’s role in South Africa’s gambling and lottery ecosystem.
The session took place on Wednesday, February 18, in Kareedouw, within the Koukamma Local Municipality in the Sarah Baartman District. The workshop was part of the NLC’s broader national education drive, aimed at clarifying the commission’s mandate and improving stakeholder understanding of the lottery sector.
As the statutory regulator of the South African National Lottery, sports pools and society lotteries, the NLC is mandated by the Lotteries Act to oversee all lottery operations, ensure compliance with legal requirements, protect players and direct funds to social causes. The session reinforced this regulatory function by explaining the legislative framework that governs lottery operations and how proceeds are distributed to “good cause” beneficiaries.
Participants were briefed on key aspects of the lottery funding cycle, including the online grant application process, compliance criteria and the role of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund in channelling lottery revenues to community initiatives. Officials emphasised that understanding these systems helps civil society organisations better position themselves to access funding for impactful programmes.
Each year, the NLC conducts hundreds of education and outreach activities across South Africa, ensuring provincial workshops are tailored to local community contexts. These engagements support both lottery regulation and the grant application success rates of non-profit organisations seeking funding from lottery proceeds.
Stakeholders attending the workshop described it as informative and beneficial, with many noting that the insights gained would strengthen their capacity to engage effectively with the NLC’s systems and compliance requirements going forward.
