NLC holds Durban workshop on lottery funding compliance

South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has held an education and awareness workshop at the Wentworth Youth Centre in Durban’s Bluff area, as part of its ongoing provincial outreach in KwaZulu-Natal. The session was designed to help civil society organisations better understand the commission’s regulatory role and the steps involved in applying for lottery funding.
According to the NLC, the workshop forms part of its mandate under South Africa’s Lotteries Amendment Act, which requires it to promote public awareness of lottery regulation and educate applicants on funding qualifications and processes. Topics covered during similar workshops nationally include grant agreements, adjudication procedures, project monitoring, report writing, society lotteries and player protection measures.
The commission said the engagement in Durban is part of a broader national programme aimed at strengthening governance and transparency in the distribution of lottery-funded grants. It added that improving understanding among civil society organisations is expected to reduce administrative errors and enhance the efficiency of funding applications.
Officials also encouraged community-based organisations to make use of available support channels and training sessions to ensure full compliance with application requirements. The NLC noted that sustained engagement with stakeholders remains key to ensuring that lottery funds are properly administered and reach intended beneficiaries.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to expanding similar workshops across other provinces in the coming months as part of its ongoing public education strategy.
