National Lotteries Commission partners Mpumalanga to boost lottery-funded development

Both parties outlined plans to align funding priorities with provincial needs.

South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has initiated a partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to strengthen the role of lottery funding in provincial development.

The engagement, led by NLC Board Chairperson Barney Pityana, brought together provincial executives, including Members of the Executive Council (MECs) and departmental leadership. Discussions focused on identifying joint programmes that can be financed through the NLC’s grant-making system while leveraging the department’s sector expertise.

During the meeting, both parties outlined plans to align funding priorities with provincial needs. The initiative involves co-developing projects that can be implemented at scale, particularly in underserved communities. Key areas of focus span cultural development, sports infrastructure and community upliftment initiatives.

Pityana stated that collaboration is necessary to unlock development opportunities in Mpumalanga, emphasising that coordinated planning between funding institutions and implementing agencies can improve the impact of grants. He also addressed ways to improve project identification and execution to ensure measurable socio-economic outcomes.

The partnership comes as the NLC continues efforts to strengthen governance and rebuild public confidence following past challenges linked to grant administration. Reforms introduced in recent years include tighter compliance systems and improved transparency in funding allocations.

By working directly with provincial authorities, the NLC aims to channel lottery revenues effectively into tangible development outcomes.

Next steps include formalising project pipelines and establishing implementation frameworks between the two institutions. The collaboration is expected to guide future funding allocations in Mpumalanga, prioritising sustainability and accountability within the lottery-funded development model.
