Mauritius horse-racing gets boost as SA’s thoroughbreds set to strengthen betting fields
A strong group of runners from South Africa will arrive on the island, adding depth to the Mauritian racing pool.
Mauritius.- Mauritius horse-racing is set for a boost as a new group of thoroughbred runners from South Africa prepares to join the island’s racing pool, a development expected to strengthen race fields and support betting interest ahead of the season.
The horses are scheduled to arrive from Cape Town, with several Mauritian trainers preparing to add the runners to their stables, according to a report by SAHorseracing. “A strong and varied group of runners is set to arrive from Cape Town this weekend,” stated the report.
The 2026 Mauritius horse-racing season is scheduled to begin on April 25 at the Champ de Mars racecourse, with more than 27 race meetings planned over several months. The incoming consignment includes horses across multiple age groups and merit-rating bands, ranging from established performers to younger prospects expected to develop through local competition.
The Mauritian trainers are all set to receive the incoming horses once they arrive on the island. Trainer Paul Kune is expected to add Fear of Fire, Mount Augustus and One Cape to his stable, while the Gujadhur stable will receive Boom Town, Makazole and View of the World.
Further stable additions
The group includes established performers rated above the 100 mark alongside progressive three-year-olds and an unraced prospect.
Other runners are scheduled to join Vincent Allet, including Bombardier Boy, Ibhele, Mfethu, Nou Praat Jy and Ready to Charge, while Vinod Ruhee is expected to receive Jet Blackfire, Lomu, Military Force and World Warrior.
Additional arrivals include Dance to the Sun, Gimmeanotherchance and That’ll B The Day for Alain Nagadoo, as well as Firelighter, La Cadière d’Azur and Pennsylvania for Cédric Daby.
Trainer Jean-Michel Awotar is also set to receive several horses, including Call Me Wild, Carnarvon, Isikwishikwishi, Old Fashioned, Siriano, Underworld and The Grey King. The shipment also includes Digital Asset and Symbolic Gesture for Samraj Mootien, while Future Swing, rated 116 in South Africa, is scheduled to join Rameshwar Gujadhur.
Horse racing in Mauritius is closely linked to pari-mutuel betting, where betting pools are formed around each race and winnings are shared among successful bettors. Stronger and more competitive race fields can increase interest among punters, making the arrival of imported runners an important part of maintaining competitive racing on the island.
