Lesotho Casino Board visits Botswana’s Gambling Authority

Botswana.- In an effort to enhance gambling regulation and foster regional collaboration, the Lesotho Casino Board has embarked on a benchmarking campaign with Botswana’s Gambling Authority.
The visit, held on April 28, underscores a shared commitment to strengthening regulatory frameworks and promoting responsible gambling practices across Southern Africa.
During the visit, the Lesotho delegation engaged with the Authority to gain insights into the country’s regulatory advancements since implementing the Gambling Act of 2012. The Authority has been instrumental in diversifying the gaming industry, implementing a responsive licensing regime and promoting responsible gaming initiatives.
The Authority has also recently undertaken significant reforms, including the issuance of 16 new licences aimed at boosting local industry participation and economic growth. Notably, 72 per cent of these licences were awarded to citizen-owned companies, reflecting a strategic emphasis on empowering local entrepreneurs.
The Authority’s commitment to responsible gambling is evident through initiatives such as the “Motshameko o Phepa” (Clean Gaming) campaign, which has reached more than 100 villages. The Botswana government also recently partnered with NGOs to provide resources for individuals battling gambling addiction.
This visit by the Lesotho Casino Board serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and the adoption of best practices in gambling regulation. By engaging with the Authority, Lesotho aims to improve its regulatory framework and promote integrity in the gambling sector.
