Kenyan Gaming Operators Urge Tax Relief to Boost Sports Investment
Gaming industry taxes account for 1% of Kenya’s revenue in 2024.
Kenya.- The Association of Gaming Operators (AGOK) in Kenya has called on the government to lower tax policies, a move that could see them increase investment in the local sports industry.
AGOK chairman Sasa Krneta made the remarks at the association’s annual executives’ gala, which was held in Nairobi on Friday, March 28.
According to Krneta, the government should view itself as a partner rather than just a regulator, considering how much the industry contributes in taxes.
Krneta said: “Our members in AGOK continue contributing immensely to the development of sports through sponsorships, and this has gone far in developing talent and creating employment for hundreds of young Kenyans.
“In 2024 alone, the gaming industry contributed over Ksh 24 billion (€171.6m) in taxes, which accounts for a little over 1% of total national revenue.”
He also said that the gaming industry employs around 10,000 people and that about half a million Kenyans rely on it “in one way or another,” making it a vital part of the country’s economic fabric.
“On top of that, gaming companies invest heavily in sponsorships, and CSR, supporting sports, health, education and local communities. We estimate that around 1 billion KES was invested into sponsorships and CSR projects in 2024.” Krneta added.
The gala was attended by government officials and key private stakeholders from the betting, lottery and gaming industries.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO Harold Ndege, who also spoke at the event, assured operators of the federation’s willingness to partner with them to promote the development of football in Kenya.
He said: “At the heart of our transformation is a commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism. We are establishing strong governance structures to ensure football operations are efficient, ethical and financially sustainable.
“Every partnership, investment and decision within our federation is driven by a clear purpose, to grow the game with integrity and trust. We are creating a system where all stakeholders, from clubs to corporate sponsors, can operate with confidence, knowing that football in Kenya is built on fairness, excellence and long-term sustainability.”
