GrandWest Casino builds management team for US$40m mall expansion

GrandWest Mall is moving into its next phase as the R650m expansion takes shape, with three senior roles now open ahead of the planned 2027 launch.

South Africa.- GrandWest Casino is expanding its wider entertainment offering with the R650m (US$40m) development of GrandWest Mall, as developer Flanagan & Gerard begins recruiting the senior management team that will lead the new retail component ahead of its planned June 2027 opening.

Flanagan & Gerard said: “We’re building GrandWest. Now we’re building the team. GrandWest Mall is taking shape, and we’re looking for the people who will help lead, launch and bring the development to life.”

The developer is recruiting for general manager, marketing manager and operations manager positions. The General Manager will lead the centre from pre-opening through launch and into ongoing operations, while the Marketing Manager will oversee the GrandWest brand and marketing journey. The Operations Manager will drive operational readiness and coordinate teams, service providers and other requirements.

Flanagan & Gerard said it is looking for commercially minded, adaptable candidates who are willing to learn and excited by the opportunity to help build the centre from the ground up.

The mall will be seamlessly integrated into the existing GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, adding retail, dining and lifestyle offerings to the destination. The GrandWest Mall is being developed through a joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard, which holds a 90 per cent stake, and GrandWest, a Sun International subsidiary, which holds 10 per cent.

Casino precinct expands its offering

The sod-turning ceremony was held on June 19 and formally marked the start of construction, following the transfer of the land into the joint venture.

GrandWest General Manager Mervyn Naidoo said the development would broaden the appeal of the existing destination. “The GrandWest precinct is one of South Africa’s most visited entertainment destinations. The addition of GrandWest Mall will strengthen its family appeal and broaden its offering, creating a day-to-night destination where retail, leisure, dining and lifestyle converge,” he said.

The existing GrandWest precinct includes Cape Town’s only casino, as well as hotels, an ice rink, conferencing, a cinema and the Grand Arena. GrandWest says the precinct attracts around 500,000 visitors a month and has an 11,000m² casino gambling area with 2,300 slot machines.

More than 70 per cent of the mall’s gross lettable area was already leased, with a further 20 per cent under offer. The development will include Checkers FreshX, Halaal SuperSpar, Dis-Chem and Clicks, alongside fashion brands from Mr Price Group, Truworths Group and Pepkor. It will also connect with existing entertainment attractions including Magic Company and Ten Pin Bowling.

The recruitment campaign gives application deadlines of October 9 2026 for the Marketing Manager, November 1 2026 for the General Manager and January 1 2027 for the Operations Manager.
