Gold Reef City strike enters second month as pay talks stall
The dispute began on April 25, with workers rejecting a 0.9 per cent wage offer and demanding higher pay, transport support and the restoration of benefits.
South Africa.- Gold Reef City Casino and Theme Park workers have continued their strike into a second month after talks over wages and conditions failed to produce a settlement.
The dispute began when workers rejected a 0.9 per cent wage increase, arguing that it was insufficient to offset rising living costs. According to union representatives, the workers are seeking an increase of between 7.5 and 12 per cent. Management has reportedly made a revised offer of 4 per cent, which is linked to backdating and the payment of outstanding bonuses. Some employees have reportedly experienced delayed or partial salary payments during the strike.
The picket line has remained in place outside the Ormonde complex, and the theme park has been intermittently closed since industrial action began. According to local reports, casino operations have continued in a limited form.
The Gauteng gambling regulator has confirmed that it is reviewing complaints linked to the dispute, including allegations related to staffing arrangements during the strike. Local reports said the regulator expects to complete its review within about a week.
