Ghana lottery authority warns public against fake lottery promotions and prize scams
The regulator said scammers are contacting people with claims of special rewards, promotions or lottery-related offers.
Ghana.- Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA) has issued a public warning over fraudulent schemes using the authority’s name to deceive lottery players and members of the public.
In a fraud alert published by the NLA on Wednesday, April 28, the regulator said scammers are contacting people with claims of special rewards, promotions or lottery-related offers while pretending to represent the authority. The agency stated that it does not contact individuals for such promotions and advised the public to verify suspicious claims through its official customer service lines.
The NLA said fraudsters often use the names, logos and images linked to lottery institutions to gain trust before asking victims for payments or personal information. In earlier public notices, the authority reported that scammers had created fake social media accounts and used false promises of winning numbers or prize payouts to collect money from victims through mobile money transfers.
Lottery-related scams remain a concern across several gambling markets. Fraud cases commonly involve messages claiming a person has won a prize, followed by requests for processing fees, taxes or verification payments before winnings can be released. These schemes frequently imitate legitimate lottery branding to appear credible.
The latest NLA advisory urges players to avoid sharing financial details or sending money to individuals claiming to act on behalf of the authority. The regulator also advised the public to confirm any lottery communication through official channels before responding.
The operator asked the public to report suspected fraud attempts and to use its official contact numbers for verification and assistance. The Authority said public awareness remains necessary to reduce financial losses linked to lottery impersonation schemes.
