Ghana.- The Gaming Commission of Ghana (GCG) held a sensitisation session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) for its management team at the Commission’s head office in Accra. The GCG, which regulates casinos, sports betting and other gambling operations, is using the training to strengthen transparency and accountability across the sector.

The recent session was facilitated by the Commission’s RTI Unit. It was attended by Angela Kpegah, Commissioner at the RTI Commission. The training highlighted the importance of compliance with the RTI Act across public institutions.

Kpegah said that adherence is “not only a legal obligation but also a crucial step in strengthening good governance, transparency and public trust”, according to a GCG press release. She commended the Commission for prioritising RTI sensitisation and urged Management to lead by example in embedding RTI principles into daily operations.

Commitment to transparency

The Acting Gaming Commissioner, Emmanuel Quainoo, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to upholding the Act. He said: “Management and staff are dedicated to ensuring the public’s right to access information is fully respected and that the Commission remains responsive to the expectations of citizens.”

Participants were guided through the purpose of the RTI Act, procedures for making and processing information requests, statutory timelines, exemptions and appeal mechanisms. The briefing also emphasised the role of the RTI Officer in ensuring timely and accurate responses.

The session forms part of the Commission’s broader efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, promote transparency and enhance accountability across its operations.
