Ghana Football Association bans betting on domestic football
Association President Kurt Okraku cracks down on wagers in Ghana’s leagues while welcoming ethical partnerships.
Ghana.- The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a ban on betting across all local competitions, aiming to protect the integrity of domestic football and ensure fair play. At the same time, the Association signalled that it is willing to collaborate with responsible, licensed betting operators in ways that support the sport.
Kurt Okraku, GFA President and 2nd Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), made the announcement at the Association’s congress on August 12.
Okraku said: “No betting company is allowed to take bets on our domestic leagues. We are, however, open to partnerships with credible, legal betting companies who wish to engage with our football ecosystem transparently and ethically.”
The ban applies to the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, Women’s Premier League and all other local tournaments. Okraku said the step is critical to maintaining transparency, ensuring fair play and keeping matches free from outside influence.
Responsible betting supported, rule-breakers punished
Even while the GFA tightens regulations, it still welcomes responsible betting companies. Okraku said sponsorship is important for the growth of football, but any partnership must follow principles of transparency, ethics and integrity.
The Association has already launched legal action against companies operating outside the rules. “We are pursuing legal action locally and internationally against companies that unlawfully take bets on our leagues. Our legal department is working closely with reputable legal firms to confront these activities head-on,” said Okraku.
These are among broader reforms prior to the season. By outlining rules around betting partnerships and tightening governance, the GFA aims to keep domestic football competitive and credible.
Okraku urged clubs, stakeholders and fans to report any breaches of the ban, warning that those who ignore the rules will face strong regulatory and legal consequences.
The GFA has made it clear that while ethical partnerships are supported, any attempt to compromise the game will be met with decisive action.
