Gauteng Gambling Board hands over new sports court to Bona Secondary School
The facility, built within the school premises, is designed to support a range of sporting codes and physical education activities.
South Africa.- The Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB), in partnership with social impact and community support group COPA, has handed over a newly constructed multipurpose combination court to learners at Bona Secondary School in Orlando, Soweto, giving a major boost to their sporting development.
The facility, built within the school premises, is designed to support a range of sporting codes and physical education activities, providing learners with a safe, functional space to train, compete and develop their athletic talents. School officials say the court is expected to play an important role in encouraging youth participation in sport while promoting discipline, teamwork and healthy lifestyles among pupils.
Bona Secondary School is located in Orlando, one of Soweto’s historically significant communities, where access to quality sports infrastructure remains limited for many public schools. Initiatives like this, which bring modern facilities to township schools, are seen as vital for reducing inequalities in school sports and nurturing young talent.
The GGB and COPA described the handover as part of a broader commitment to community development, noting that sport can serve as a powerful tool for social inclusion and youth empowerment. COPA’s involvement aligns with its mission to tackle poverty by supporting initiatives that create opportunities for young people and strengthen community structures.
Representatives from the school management and the school governing body were present at the handover and expressed appreciation for the collaboration that made the project possible. They acknowledged that the approval and support of the school’s leadership were key to ensuring the successful completion of the court.
With the new court now officially in use, Bona Secondary School learners are expected to gain improved access to structured sporting programmes, helping them pursue both recreational and competitive sporting ambitions in an environment better suited to their needs.
