Botswana Gambling Authority participates in Welkom horse racing event
Regulator joins community horse racing gathering, promoting responsible gambling awareness and local engagement.
Botswana.- Botswana’s Gambling Authority joined community leaders and racing enthusiasts at the Welkom horse racing event, reinforcing the regulator’s engagement with grassroots sporting events and responsible gambling awareness.
Held at Welkom Farm in the Kgalagadi region, the event drew spectators and participants from across surrounding communities for a lively day of racing and entertainment. Horse racing gatherings in rural Botswana remain popular social occasions, bringing together families, competitors and spectators to celebrate sport and local culture.
The event was attended by the Council Chairperson of Kgalagadi North District, Steven Lekgobero, whose presence underscored the importance of such gatherings in strengthening community participation and regional development.
According to the Gambling Authority, the race meeting highlighted the strong community spirit surrounding horse racing in the region. “The horse racing event created a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate sport, culture and entertainment,” the Authority said.
The Welkom race is one of several community racing events the Gambling Authority has supported in recent years as it promotes responsible gambling awareness and engagement with Botswana’s racing sector.
The regulator recently participated in the Ma-Sa Horse Racing event held at Ma-Sa Racing Park near Maun, which drew competitors from across Botswana as well as neighbouring South Africa and Namibia. The authority has also been involved in the Motokwe Horse Racing Championships, where sports betting has been introduced as part of efforts to integrate regulated betting into Botswana’s horse racing ecosystem.
For regulators, events such as the Welkom race provide an opportunity to engage directly with communities while supporting organised racing activities linked to Botswana’s broader gambling and sporting landscape.
