The regulator highlighted the potential of Botswana’s racing sector at the Ma-Sa Horse Racing event, where officials said the sport could support tourism and rural economic development.

Botswana.- The Botswana Gambling Authority has highlighted the growing potential of the country’s horse racing sector after participating in the Easter Ma-Sa Horse Racing event, which it described as a premier showcase of local talent, sportsmanship and the potential of the racing industry.

The event held on April 4 was attended by Jacob Kelebeng, Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, who commended organisers for their efforts to professionalise the sport and strengthen the racing sector. Kelebeng said: “Horse racing has the potential to become a vital catalyst for sport tourism and sustainable rural economic development.”

The race was held at Ma-Sa Racing Park near Maun in the Samedupi area, attracting participants from across Botswana as well as neighbouring South Africa and Namibia to compete in multiple race categories.

The Gambling Authority said its participation reflects its role as industry regulator and its commitment to fostering an environment in which racing events can thrive within a framework of integrity and professional standards.

It added that ensuring responsible gambling remains a key priority as the racing sector continues to develop alongside regulated betting activities.
