Botswana Gambling Authority issues tender for nationwide problem gambling study

Findings from the research are expected to guide licensing conditions.

Botswana.- Botswana Gambling Authority has issued a tender inviting citizen-owned companies to conduct a nationwide study on the prevalence of excessive and problem gambling, as regulators move to strengthen evidence-based policy in the sector.

The tender, referenced GA 3/1/5-I 001/2026-2027, covers “Research on the Prevalence of Excessive and Problem Gambling in Botswana” and is restricted to 100 per cent Botswana citizen-owned companies.

According to the notice, interested bidders are required to pay a non-refundable fee of P1000 (€64) for the tender document, while youth-owned companies will pay P500 (€32). Payment is to be made via electronic funds transfer into the Gambling Authority’s designated bank account.

After payment, companies must submit their details, including company name, contact person, and telephone number, to the official procurement email address provided by the regulator in order to obtain the tender documents. The bidding window closes on June 24, 2026 at 1200 hours.

While the Gambling Authority has not publicly detailed the full scope of the research methodology, such studies typically involve behavioural analysis and assessment of gambling frequency, spending patterns, and harm indicators. Findings from the research are expected to guide licensing conditions, responsible gambling frameworks, and intervention programmes.

The Gambling Authority has in recent years tightened its focus on responsible gambling, driven by concerns over rising online betting activity and easier access through mobile platforms.

Through the tender, the regulator can quantify problem gambling rates, as well as assess the effectiveness of existing safeguards, particularly as digital betting channels expand.

Similar studies in jurisdictions such as South Africa, Kenya, and Namibia have been used to inform advertising restrictions, self-exclusion systems, and affordability checks for bettors.
