Bolabet Zambia funds new basketball court in Lusaka
The project, expected to take six to eight weeks, has drawn calls for greater private-sector support for Zambian sport.
Zambia.- Bolabet Zambia has expanded its investment in Zambian sports infrastructure with funding for the construction of a new basketball court near the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
The project, launched at a groundbreaking ceremony, is being delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts and will be constructed by Tria Alfa Enterprises. Work is expected to take between six and eight weeks.
The court is intended to improve the area around the stadium while providing additional facilities for basketball, a sport that has been gaining ground among young people in Zambia.
At the ceremony, ministry permanent secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the project demonstrated how private-sector investment could support government efforts to develop sports infrastructure. He also urged other companies to support similar initiatives, particularly those that create opportunities for young people and strengthen community sporting facilities.
For Bolabet, the court forms part of its wider involvement in Zambian sport beyond its established presence in football. Chief operations officer Clive Lewis said the company remained committed to supporting different sporting disciplines and identified basketball as an area with further potential for growth.
Lewis said Bolabet’s involvement in basketball would continue, noting that the company already sponsors Matero Magic, a pro basketball club in Lusaka, making the court project an extension of its existing support for the sport.
The initiative also drew support from the Bookmakers & iGaming Association of Zambia (BiGA). Its president, Ray Kumwenda, described the partnership as an example for other betting operators and called for greater private-sector investment in youth and sports programmes.
