betPawa’s Locker Room Bonus surpasses US$1.67m in direct player payouts across Africa
Operator says initiative has delivered more than 47,000 performance bonuses to 7,000 players across eight African markets.
Ghana.- Sports betting operator betPawa says its Locker Room Bonus has surpassed US$1.67m in direct performance payments to athletes across eight African countries, with more than 47,000 bonuses paid to over 7,000 players and technical staff since the initiative was launched.
According to figures released by betPawa on July 22, the initiative has reached 387 teams and rewarded victories in nearly 3,000 football, basketball and volleyball matches across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Cameroon.
Founder Kresten Buch said the initiative was designed to reward sporting performance through direct incentives. Buch said: “It’s not charity in the sense that we are giving equal amount of money to everyone. We are supporting competitiveness by paying the winners. It’s an outcome-based payment.”
The operator said equal payments are built into the initiative, with players competing in women’s domestic leagues receiving the same per-win bonus as those in men’s competitions.
The latest milestone follows betPawa’s recent renewal of its sponsorship of Tanzania’s Basketball Dar es Salaam League (BDL), committing an estimated TSh588.9m (US$224,000) through the Locker Room Bonus during the 2026 season. Under the agreement, players and technical staff receive direct bonuses after every league victory.
betPawa said it plans to expand the Locker Room Bonus into additional African markets, leagues and sports after recently extending the initiative to the Kenya Volleyball Federation. Player identities are verified through its pawaPass system before bonuses are paid via mobile money.
