betPawa uses mobile-money technology to deliver instant bonuses to African athletes
Locker Room Bonus programme delivers mobile-money payouts to football and basketball players, helping address delays in athlete payments across several African leagues.
Uganda.- betPawa is using mobile-money technology to distribute instant match bonuses to football and basketball players across African leagues through its Locker Room Bonus programme, a system designed to help address long-standing delays in athlete payments.
The initiative allows players to receive cash bonuses after match victories, with payments sent directly to their mobile money wallets. The system uses betPawa’s digital verification and payment infrastructure to ensure that eligible players and coaching staff instantly receive rewards following wins.
The Locker Room Bonus programme was first introduced in Ghana in 2022 and has since expanded to several African markets, including Uganda, Rwanda and other African markets, where players in domestic leagues receive bonuses after victories.
Mobile bonus system
In a report published by TechCabal, the Locker Room Bonus was described as a technology-driven system that enables players to receive match bonuses through mobile-money payments shortly after victories.
Bonuses are awarded when a team wins a match. Under the programme, bonuses are distributed to players in the match-day squad as well as selected members of the technical staff. Player identities and mobile numbers are verified before matches to ensure payments are processed correctly.
The digital payment system is designed to improve the speed of match bonus payments in leagues where athletes have historically experienced delays in receiving payments.
By integrating mobile payments with sports performance incentives, the Locker Room Bonus programme represents a new model for how betting operators are engaging with professional and semi-professional sports leagues across Africa.
