Africa’s future gamers get a jumpstart with free GameUp Bootcamp
Nigeria.-Maliyo Games, a Nigeria-based studio, has officially opened applications for the 2025 GameUp Africa Bootcamp, its flagship online program that trains Africa’s next generation of game developers for global careers at no cost.
Now in its fifth year, the initiative has already helped more than 1,500 learners from more than 20 African countries gain the skills and mentorship needed to break into the booming international gaming industry. As one of Africa’s most accessible talent accelerators, the programme opens doors to aspiring game developers continent-wide.
Maliyo Games founder and CEO, Hugo Obi, stated that in just five years, GameUp Africa has evolved into one of the continent’s most impactful game development initiatives.

Obi said: “We have seen learners grow into leaders, launching their own projects, joining studios and shaping the future of Africa’s game development scene. This year’s edition builds on that momentum with even more structure, scale and support for new talent.”
The 12-week project-based course in online instruction, set to kick off on September 1, is designed to transform raw talent into professional creatives who can compete globally. The students are taught game art, design and audio through practical training from international mentors, industry trainers and a motivating peer group.
From gamers to industry leaders
The Bootcamp has built a reputation as more than just a training ground. Alumni have secured roles at leading studios, launched their own games, and driven innovation in Africa’s fast-growing gaming market.
This year’s edition introduces new features, including game jams to sharpen rapid prototyping skills, community meet-ups to enhance networking and visibility, and an elite alumni track offering top graduates exclusive career opportunities.
Maliyo Games reminded candidates from across Africa that applications are now open via the programme’s official website and will close on August 21. The upcoming class will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills, mentorship and international exposure through GameUp Africa.
