Washington DC looks into sports betting
A DC Council Committee held a public hearing to assess a bill that would legalise sports betting in the district.
US.- Sports betting has already been legalised in New Jersey, West Virginia and several other states after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) got revoked by the Supreme Court. However, many other governments continue to assess whether to regulate the segment and how to do so, and Washington DC is one of them.
This week, the D.C Council Committee on Finance and Revenue held a public hearing to discuss a bill that would bring the segment into the district. The piece of legislation, the Sports Wagering Lottery Amendment Act of 2018, was introduced on September 18 by six Council members in order to expand gambling in the region.
According to one of the bill’s main sponsors, council member Jack Evans, the council needs to act fast before Maryland and Virginia take similar action. “Sports betting is going to happen and I believe we should act before our neighbouring jurisdictions,” he assured.
