Vietnam police strikes illegal gambling
The authorities have dismantled an online gambling operation which operated several websites worth nearly €22 million.
Vietnam.- The online gambling segment continues to thrive worldwide and, as it evolves, illegal operators also take advantage of its success. However, Vietnamese police have dismantled an illegal online gambling ring worth around €22 million and struck the unauthorised segment with a major hit. Beside the recent operation, the authorities continue to investigate another online gambling ring with an estimated worth of €459 million.
The authorities raided several houses across diferent cities in the country and arrested 10 people, confiscated guns and cash and identified the operation’s leader. “We arrested seven people and three others turned themselves in. The investigation is still ongoing to see if anyone else is involved,” the police explained about the operation.
The illegal gambling network operated across several provinces in central and southern Vietnam. They even offered high-interest loans and could be hired to collect debts using force, local media reports.
The Vietnamese market is still very restricted, despite the government’s announcement to allow the sports betting segment to ease into the country. Meanwhile, most gambling continues to be illegal in Vietnam and running illegal operations like the one that has been broken up can carry a maximum jail term of 10 years.
