US: MMCT casino work gets delayed
Demolition of the former Showcase Cinemas in East Windsor – where the MMCT casino will be located – has been postponed.
US.- Last Wednesday was an important day for the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes (MMCT) as the first stage of their casino development in East Windsor was set to take place. However, the demolition of the Showcase Cinemas’ building (where the venue will be located) was delayed and the schedule has been changed.
Apparently, the tribes are still preparing the logistics for a planned ceremony for the demolition, as informed by First Selectman Robert Maynard. Furthermore, he explained that the demolition permit wasn’t issued until Tuesday due to utility issues at the site.
News of the delay are not encouraging at all for the first tribal casino in Connecticut on non-tribal land, as the legislature’s Public Safety and Security Committee has also introduced a bill that would rescind the state’s approval of the East Windsor project and create a competitive process for a casino. That is the path favoured by MGM, which has proposed a casino in Bridgeport to counter the competition to its Massachusetts venue.
