Tribes seek sports betting operations
US native tribes that currently operate casino offerings are aiming for a sports betting share.
US.- As the US has legalised sports betting industry at a Federal level (now that the US Supreme Court has determined that the PASPA amendment was unconstitutional) major casino and gaming operators are seeking a share of the new market. That is also the case for native tribes that currently have a gaming licence for casino operations and are now interested in expanding their businesses.
According to official sources, Connecticut’s native Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe, operators of Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe, would expand their casino offerings by adding sports betting once the government starts granting licences for the new business.
Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council, said he had met with state legislators and representatives of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to begin negotiations. “We have said, ‘We want to work with you,’” Butler said. “Let’s work out an arrangement.”
America Indian tribes welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court to lift the federal ban on sports betting as they will be able to offer it at hundreds of casinos all across the country. While it isn’t expected that it will boost tribes’ finances, it will increase their offerings.
Many tribes all across the country have signed agreements with the state governments in which it is detailed that they give a share of casino profits in exchange for exclusive rights to offer gambling services. Some tribes believe that those agreements give them the exclusive control of sports betting, while others said that they’re willing to work out the details with the states.
