Tasmania prone to North-West casino
The Tasmanian government is reported to be willing to develop a casino hotel development in the North-West region.
Australia.- The Tasmanian state government is apparently taking up a former Labor rebel’s proposal for a casino hotel development in the North-West region. However, the initiative is not expected to be successful until the Federal Group’s exclusive right to operate within the gambling segment ends, and that won’t be earlier than 2023.
Some politicians have assured such a development would be “an economic game-changer” but have urged for a partnership between the public and the private sector in order to develop a top tier casino hotel. Brenton Best, a former member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly, praised the potential development and projected it would take three years and US$235.2 million to build.
Best, who might run as an “independent Labor” in the state election, has urged the authorities to invite MONA founder David Walsh to take part of the development, as he has already made proposals like this one in the past. Furthermore, in 2016, Treasurer Peter Gutwein voiced his support for Walsh’s project and said: “(…) the government’s position is that limited new high roller, non-residential casino licenses should be available in Tasmania in addition to the Federal Group’s two casinos”.
