Switzerland to decide on international operators

The Swiss government is set to organise a referendum to decide on online gambling operators with international licenses.

Switzerland.- Internationally licensed gambling operators suffered a major setback in Europe as Swiss legislators voted to restrict operations to land-based casino operators. However, voters could eventually had the final word on the matter as a referendum could soon take place in the country.

Under the new law, Swiss internet service providers (ISPs) will block the domains of unauthorised gambling sites. However, the Internet Society Switzerland Chapter (ISOC-CH) and three political parties are collecting signatures to organise a referendum on the issue. They have until January 18 to reach 50k signatures and already have 65k but only 25k have been certified.

According to the youth organisation of Switzerland’s Free Democratic Party’s (FDP) president Andri Silberscmidt, the challenging group wants to avoid “digital isolation” as they argue the government can’t start banning online posibilities for players. “Freedom for the economy and the internet, has great support in Switzerland,” he said.
