Sweden grants 116 licences in less than three months

The gambling regulator has revealed the number of licences granted so far in 2019, most of them being for online games.

Sweden.- The Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, revealed on Monday that it has granted 116 licences as of March 11, 2019. Most of them have been issued for online games, a modality that keeps growing in the country.

Sweden debuted its newly-regulated gambling market on January 1, 2019, and introduced major changes for the local industry, such as the rebrand of the local regulator and the introduction of new iGaming companies.

The regulator said that as of Monday, 116 licences had been granted to be able to operate legally in the country, and 62 of them were for online commercial games, such as rebrand of the local regulator and the introduction of new iGaming companies.

Moreover, 44 licences have been granted for commercial betting, like sports betting and betting on horses. The five licences granted for land-based commercial games include, for example, a casino at a restaurant.

The number of licensees was 72, meaning that several licence-holders have more than one licence for different modalities to operate in Sweden.
