Spanish economy grows along with sports betting
Spanish gaming authorities revealed a growth in gross gaming revenue led by the sports betting sector.
Spain.- The sports betting sector has boosted the general economy in Spain, according to the official financial report released this week by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), the national authority on the gaming industry in the European country. In general, the gaming industry reported positive results in Spain.
As the official report shows, gross gaming revenue in Spain achieved a growth of 2.33% quarter-on-quarter during the second quarter of the year. In the three months through to the end of June, sports betting industry led the market, as usual, but with the boost of the Fifa World Cup among international players.
The DGOJ report also reveals that the second quarter of 2018’s gross gaming revenue was €167.2 million, which represents a year-on-year increase of 40.15% and a marginal increase on the period, compared to the same quarter of 2017. The only sector that reported a decrease by 9.4% quarter-on-quarter was online poker, which had gone through a significant growth in the previous months as the Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French markets entered to an agreement of online poker shared liquidity.
Meanwhile, the sports betting sector reported an increase of 32.75% in comparison with the previous quarter. This general growth represents an increase of 7.07% quarter-on-quarter for the vertical and a 46.68% year-on-year increase.
