Revolut Ireland to block credit card gambling
The Fintech company has confirmed it will block credit card payments to gambling operators in Ireland.
Ireland.- Revolut Ireland has confirmed that it will begin to block payments to gambling websites using credit cards. The move preempts proposed legislation that would prohibit credit card gambling in Ireland.
The fintech company already offers the gambling block feature in its app in Ireland but it will now automatically block all credit card payments to gambling operators, including betting shops, online casinos or sports betting apps.
Irish gaming operators have already agreed not to accept credit card payments, but a bill put forward by Ireland’s minister of state for law reform, youth justice and immigration, James Browne, in October would ban credit card gambling. However, there are no current rules requiring e-wallets and the like to block gambling payments.
A Revolut spokesperson said: “In addition to the 48-hour gambling block that all users can currently activate themselves, Revolut is already planning to block the use of credit card funds on gambling sites in Ireland, in the same way that we do in the UK.”
In Britain, the Gambling Commission banned credit card payments for gambling, including via apps and e-wallets, in April 2020. The regulator has since published evidence supporting the ban.
