Halloween in igaming: How providers turn holiday buzz into profit
1spin4win’s business development director spoke with Royal Partners to share insights into the development of seasonal themed slots, their commercial potential and player interest.
Key takeaways:
- 1spin4win business development director Olga Hlukhouskaya says the company’s seasonal slots are reskins of games with established, popular maths models rather than entirely new game developments.
- Hlukhouskaya says visual design remains central to seasonal releases, with 1spin4win updating symbols, backgrounds and animations to create a cohesive holiday atmosphere.
- She says 1spin4win prepares seasonal games well in advance and aims to have titles ready at least a month before official release, partly because some clients offer pre-releases several weeks early.
- According to Hlukhouskaya, a seasonal slot can recoup its development costs in as little as a month during periods of high holiday activity, with turnover rising again when the holiday returns the following year.
- 1spin4win’s portfolio includes five Halloween-themed games, with Golden Joker Halloween scheduled for release on October 22; the company says its previous Halloween titles also see increased activity during each holiday period.
Interview.- Every October, Halloween transforms the familiar landscape of online casinos. Game lobbies fill with themed slots, providers introduce holiday releases, and operators draw players’ attention to special game selections. For players, it’s an opportunity to choose a game that matches their mood. For businesses, it’s another way to attract attention to their products.
But behind the spooky atmosphere and festive visuals lie some serious business questions. How are seasonal slots developed? Can they recoup their costs during such a short holiday period? And do they have a life beyond October 31?
To get a behind-the-scenes look at the industry, Royal Partners spoke with Olga Hlukhouskaya, business development director at 1spin4win. She shared insights into the development of Halloween-themed slots, their commercial potential, and player interest in seasonal releases.
Are seasonal slots simply reskins of existing games, or are they developed entirely from scratch? How much attention do you pay to the visuals to capture the holiday atmosphere?
All our seasonal slots are reskins of games with established, popular math models. There’s little point in developing a seasonal slot with completely new mechanics because it would make it difficult to assess how appealing the game itself is to players. A significant increase in activity during the holiday period would be driven by the seasonal theme, making it impossible to evaluate the game’s organic performance.
That said, we put a great deal of effort into the visual design of our seasonal slots. Our art department updates the symbols, backgrounds, and animations, making sure all the elements complement one another and create a cohesive holiday atmosphere. We want players to feel fully immersed in that atmosphere while playing.
“There’s little point in developing a seasonal slot with completely new mechanics because it would make it difficult to assess how appealing the game itself is to players”.
Olga Hlukhouskaya, business development director at 1spin4win.
How far in advance do you start preparing a Halloween release? How does the process differ from developing a regular slot, and how challenging is it to meet holiday deadlines?
These days, we prepare all our games well in advance. We maintain a reserve of content and decide which slot to release, along with its mechanics and visual design, based on current performance data from our portfolio.
The process is no different for games tied to seasonal events. For example, our Christmas and New Year’s games are already nearing completion, even though the holiday season is still more than two months away.
We also started preparing our Halloween game well in advance. The idea was discussed back in the first half of 2026. Joker has been gaining popularity among players, and we can see that in our portfolio statistics. That’s why we decided to create a themed game featuring this particular character.
We don’t leave development until the last minute because we have a well-established process. Every game is prepared ahead of schedule, as it must first go through a pre-release phase.
Some 1spin4win clients are happy to offer our slots as pre-releases, not just one week before the official launch, as was traditionally the case, but several weeks in advance. They want to give their players exclusive access to new content for a longer period. That’s why it’s important for us to have a game ready at least a month before its official release.
Once Halloween is over, does interest in the slot disappear too? Can seasonal releases recoup their development costs, and do they remain relevant after the holiday?
In our experience, a seasonal slot can recoup its costs in as little as a month, thanks to high player activity during the holiday period. Does it remain just as popular outside the season? No. However, when the holiday returns the following year, themed slots see another increase in turnover as player demand picks up.
The 1spin4win portfolio currently includes five Halloween-themed games, with another one, Golden Joker Halloween, scheduled for release on October 22. All our previous Halloween slots also see increased activity during the holiday period. So it wouldn’t be accurate to say these games simply fade away. We see a new surge in activity every year.
Looking beyond Halloween, some of our St. Patrick’s Day slots, for example, remain popular year-round. We believe this is because certain groups of players don’t associate these games as strongly with the holiday itself. St. Patrick’s Day isn’t celebrated as widely as New Year’s or Halloween, for instance. As a result, a significant portion of the audience doesn’t view these slots as exclusively seasonal, and they remain relevant throughout the year.
Halloween is traditionally a Western holiday. How relevant is this theme to players in Asia and Latin America?
I wouldn’t necessarily describe Halloween as an exclusively Western holiday, since similar traditions and celebrations take place around the world at roughly the same time of year. In Latin America, particularly in Mexico, for example, people celebrate Día de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Although it’s a separate holiday with its own traditions, it demonstrates that similar themes resonate with audiences beyond Western countries.
That’s why I wouldn’t say Halloween is irrelevant to other regions. Even in Eastern Europe, it has long been popular among a significant portion of the population. People enjoy embracing traditions from other countries, attending themed events, and dressing up in costumes.
Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day… Don’t players get tired of the constant stream of seasonal releases?
I wouldn’t say players get tired of themed slots specifically. They simply offer another option to suit their mood, rather than creating an expectation to try every new seasonal release. At the same time, a theme alone can’t replace an engaging game. Festive visuals may attract attention, but it’s the mechanics and gameplay that keep players interested.
During the holidays, operators also reorganise categories on their websites and introduce themed game selections. For providers, this creates an opportunity to reach new audiences. A player might notice one of our games for the first time, give it a try, and then become interested in the rest of our portfolio. So themed slots are also an effective way to introduce new players to a provider.
I also wouldn’t describe this as a production line. We’re talking about completely different holidays, each with its own distinctive theme, spread throughout the year. As a result, players don’t feel as though they were playing something visually similar just yesterday.
“Festive visuals may attract attention, but it’s the mechanics and gameplay that keep players interested.”
Olga Hlukhouskaya, business development director at 1spin4win.
When the holiday ends, the game goes on
Halloween may last just one day, but the commercial potential of themed slots extends well beyond the holiday calendar.
As 1spin4win’s experience shows, seasonal releases can recoup their costs in as little as a month and attract renewed player interest when Halloween returns the following year. These games also help providers expand their audiences and introduce players to other titles in their portfolios.
For operators and affiliates, the holiday buzz creates opportunities as well. Data from Royal Partners projects shows that the emotional appeal of the holiday has a noticeable impact on player behaviour. Players show strong interest in horror-themed slots, creating additional opportunities for acquisition and retention. For affiliates, it’s an ideal time to maximise the value of targeted traffic while excitement surrounding the theme is at its peak.
