National Council on Problem Gambling urges prediction market operators to promote helpline
The organisation has urged operators to promote 1-800-MY-RESET.
US.- The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has called on prediction market operators in the US to promote to the National Problem Gambling helpline. The organisation said the use of prediction markets carries substantially similar levels of risk to the consumer as sports betting and the operators should therefore promote the 1-800-MY-RESET number.
The 24/7 helpline provides free, confidential support and resources for individuals experiencing gambling-related harm.
The council stated: “NCPG believes that all operators offering gambling-like products should take meaningful, visible steps to reduce harm and promote access to help resources as a public health best practice. Whereas promoting the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-MY-RESET) is a critical baseline responsibility for any operator offering products that meaningfully resemble gambling activity and may contribute to gambling-related harm.”
It added that “consumers engaging with prediction markets may not recognize their activity as functionally gambling, irrespective of whether legally defined as such, and may therefore be less likely to demonstrate responsible gambling behavior or seek support for a gambling problem.”
In November, the NCPG announced the addition of the Texas Coalition on Problem Gambling and the Vermont Council on Gaming and Health as its newest state Affiliate members. It now has affiliates in 37 US states.
