Macau suffers long Covid
In January 2022, visitor numbers to Macau were still only a quarter of the levels recorded in January 2020.
Press release.- Macau was one of the first jurisdictions to close its gambling venues due to the pandemic, when its casinos shut for two weeks in February 2020. But, although the casinos have been open since then, China’s zero Covid strategy has hampered visitation to Macau.
In January 2022, visitor numbers to Macau were still only a quarter of the levels recorded in January 2020.
China is continuing with widespread lockdowns when cases emerge. The most recent lockdowns cover the entire province of Jilin and the city of Shenzhen. Hong Kong too is facing its worst outbreak of Covid-19, with restrictions and widespread testing in place.
