Louisiana sports betting bills could pass this week
The Senate needs to approve two of the three bills that would legalise sports betting in Louisiana.
US.- It’s a key week for the push to legalise sports betting in Louisiana, where two bills need Senate approval before a June 10 deadline.
Three bills need to be passed by the Senate before Governor John Bel Edwards can legalise sports betting, but only one has succeeded so far.
House Bill 697 was passed on May 26 and is awaiting the Governor’s signature. That bill sets out the taxation aspects for the sector.
Meanwhile, this week the Senate is expected to approve Senate Bill 142, which determines where revenues are to be directed and Senate Bill 247, the first bill introduced, which lays out much of the regulatory structure for sports betting.
If the segment gets approved, it won’t be allowed to operate statewide. Out of 64 parishes in Louisiana, only 55 voted for sports betting to be legalised. Therefore, there will be 11 parishes where locals won’t be able to bet, making Louisiana the first state to launch sports betting only in selected areas.
