Louisiana Senate committee approves sports betting

The state Senate committee approved this week a bill that allows sports betting at gaming facilities.

US.- A Louisiana State Senate committee approved on Tuesday a bill that allows gaming facilities to offer sports betting if the US Supreme Court rules in favour of lifting the federal ban. PASPA bans all states except four from offering sports betting.

Senator Danny Martiny, the author of the bill, said: “When the Supreme Court rules, I can assure you that Mississippi will be up and running in 30 to 45 days – if not sooner – and so will Arkansas.”

Local media reported that there was no verbal objection to the bill in the committee and that Senator Nobry Chabert insisted that sports betting could have a huge positive impact on state fiscal on out-of-town revenue coming in. As New Orleans hosts multiple big events throughout the year, they could benefit from tourists betting on games while in town, he said.

The bill also establishes that sports book wagering would be allowed in any facility that currently has video poker, pari-mutuel wagering, or casinos. The bill could end up in the Senate finance committee before heading to the full Senate.
