Louisiana discusses gambling
Bills pushing legalisation of sports betting, iGaming and DFS have been recently introduced in the Louisiana State Capitol.
US.- Despite being barely a week into March, it has already been a busy week for gambling, legislation-wise. During the first few days of the month, bills seeking to legalize sports betting, online gambling, and daily fantasy sports (DFS) have been introduced at the Louisiana State Capitol.
Addressing sports betting, H-245 was filed by Major Thibaut last Thursday. This aims to expand gaming activities at the state’s four horse racing facilities and to allow people to bet on any type of sports event, including – but not limited to – football, basketball, baseball, hockey, boxing, tennis, wrestling, jai alai, or other sports contest or event.
According to the bill, which would give the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) the power to regulate sports betting, “the governing authority of the parish in which the gaming activities are proposed to be held shall call and conduct a referendum election within the parish for the purpose of submitting to the qualified electors of the parish the proposition whether or not the proposed gaming activities shall be allowed.”
On Monday two other bills were introduced: one, H484, aiming to regulate DFS and the other, S-322, seeking to legalise online gambling. Under both, the government will give voters the power to decide whether they want to approve any of the activities in the state through a referendum.
