Kalshi suspends congressional candidate over trades on her own campaign
Republican candidate Laurie Buckhout agreed to pay a $2,500 fine and will be barred from the prediction market platform for three years after trading on her own election.
US.- Kalshi has suspended Laurie Buckhout, the Republican nominee for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, after she reportedly placed $1,000 in trades related to her own campaign. Buckhout bet on herself to win the election, saying she did not initially realise that the trades violated the platform’s rules.
In a statement, Buckhout described the move as a “dumb mistake” and said she acted to resolve the matter as soon as she learnt there was an issue. She has since settled with Kalshi, agreeing to pay a $2,500 fine and remain off the platform for three years.
The enforcement action relates to a breach of Kalshi’s rule 5.17(z), which prohibits “decision makers” from directly or indirectly influencing events. The platform said Buckhout had fully disclosed her activity during the investigation and provided all information requested.
Kalshi has also banned former US Congressman George Santos after he wagered on whether he would attend the State of the Union address.
