Kalshi and Polymarket already flagged more than 100 potential insider trading cases this year
The prediction market operators have reported a growing number of suspicious trades as concerns over insider activity increase.
US.- Kalshi and Polymarket have flagged more than 100 potential insider trading cases in 2026, with Kalshi reporting more than 50 and Polymarket referring over 90 accounts to authorities in the US and abroad. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has brought civil action against only three prediction market traders so far, highlighting a gap between the number of cases identified and the regulator’s enforcement activity.
The number of cases reported by Kalshi and Polymarket has raised concerns about whether existing regulatory resources are sufficient to address potential market abuse. Several recent cases have illustrated the risks. Kalshi reportedly flagged Minnesota state Senator Matthew Klein for trading on his own political race, while a US Army master sergeant was prosecuted after allegedly using classified information about the US operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to place trades on Polymarket.
Other cases have involved a former White House teleprompter operator accused of trading on information related to President Donald Trump’s speeches, as well as former Congressman George Santos, who was fined $35,000 after placing $17,000 in Kalshi contracts related to his attendance at the State of the Union address.
It’s been suggested that the CFTC does not have the capacity to regulate the sector, as prediction markets continue to expand. The regulator has also focused much of its recent activity on legal disputes with states over the legality of prediction markets. Several states argue that sports event contracts amount to illegal gambling, while the CFTC maintains that federally regulated derivatives fall under its jurisdiction.
