Irish gambling regulator to collaborate with Danish counterpart

The two gambling regulators have signed a commitment to closer cooperation on compliance, monitoring and enforcement.

Ireland.- The new Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its Danish counterpart Spillemyndigheden. The agreement comes shortly after the GRAI’s new Irish Remote Betting Licences commenced at the start of this month.

The GRAI said that the new MOU reflects a commitment to closer cooperation on compliance, monitoring and enforcement. It said the agreement was designed to support more effective information sharing and coordination between two regulators that oversee many of the same operators and market practices.

The signing followed a recent meeting between Anne Marie Caulfield, the CEO of the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, and Spillemyndigheden director general Anders Dorph. The regulators exchanged perspectives on key regulatory challenges and discussed how to align approaches where possible. Both take the view that in the digital-first age, gambling regulation increasingly requires coordinated European responses to address cross-border risks.

Caulfield said in a statement: “This Memorandum of Understanding with the Danish Gambling Authority is another vital milestone in strengthening cooperation between regulators operating in closely connected markets.

“Continued dialogue and collaboration between Ireland and Denmark will support more effective oversight and regulation, and we see this agreement as part of our continued efforts to deepen cooperation with regulatory partners across Europe.”

The GRAI is rolling out new Irish gambling licences in stages. It’s started with remote betting licences, which came into effect on July 1. It says the process for in-person betting licences will run later this year, while applications for lottery, B2B and charitable gaming licences will follow in 2027 and 2028.
