Indiana betting handle hit $463m in December

Indiana sportsbooks surpassed $400m in betting handle for the second month in a row. Online and retail wagers in 2021 grew exponentially to $3.8bn.

US.- December was yet another strong month for Indiana sportsbooks which rounded up a very busy 2021.

Sportsbooks in Indiana produced more than $25m in revenue on more than $460m in wagering. December’s figures capped a groundbreaking year in the state that produced nearly $4bn in wagers.

While in November, Indiana sportsbooks’ betting handle hit $463.7m, in December, it slightly dipped to $463m according to data released by PlayIndiana. The betting volume also decreased slightly to $14.9m per day in December from $15.5m per day in November.

The $463m in wagers generated in December 2021 was up 47.9 per cent from $313.1m in December 2020, according to official reporting. Sportsbooks generated revenue of $26m during the month, an 18.2 per cent improvement year-on-year (December 2020: $22m).

Online wagering was responsible for some 91.3 per cent or $422.8m of the betting handle in December 2021. The remaining $40.2m of the betting handle was raised by retail sportsbooks in the state.

Considering the $25.8m in taxable revenue, Indiana’s state coffers collected some $2.5m in tax revenue in December 2021.

Jake Garza, an analyst for PlayIndiana.com, said: “This fall has been so impressive for sportsbooks that it almost seems like anything other than a record month is a surprise. In context, sportsbooks remained near all-time highs for wagering and revenue, continuing a remarkable four-month stretch in which wagering was up 73.8 per cent year over year.”

Overall, during 2021 there have been $3.8bn in online and retail wagers. This marks a significant increase of 116.4 per cent when compared to the $1.8bn wagered during 2020. Gross revenues also grew significantly by 125.5 per cent to $307.6m during 2021 when compared to the $136.4m in 2020.
