Illinois expands addiction treatment framework to include gambling disorders
Senate Bill 2749 places gambling disorder alongside substance use.
U.S.- Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 2749 into law, recognising gambling disorder as part of the state’s Substance Use Disorder Act. The measure expands the role of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Division of Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery, allowing it to coordinate prevention, treatment, recovery and other support services for people affected by gambling-related harm.
The legislation requires licensed gambling establishments and master sports wagering licensees to display information provided by the IDHS on how individuals can access help for gambling disorders.
The new law also requires the creation of a dedicated hotline and website offering crisis counselling for families experiencing difficulties related to gambling disorders. In addition, the IDHS will advise the Social Services Advisory Council on preventing underage gambling and gaming, while leading public awareness initiatives about the impact gambling disorders can have on individuals, families and communities.
According to the department, around 383,000 Illinois adults, or 3.8 per cent of the state’s adult population, are estimated to have a gambling problem. A further 761,000 people, representing 7.7 per cent of adults, are considered at risk of developing one.
