Illegal gambling den shut down in Cyprus
Police raided a football club in Limassol, seizing 66 computers believed to have been used for illegal sports betting.
Cyprus.- In order to help the gambling industry to grow, the illegal segment needs to be struck down – or at least fought – in order to avoid money going to unregulated businesses. That’s why the Cyprus Police raided a football club in Limassol and seized 66 computers believed to have been used for illegal sports betting.
The authorities showed up at the Appolon football club with a search warrant and tried to reach the second floor but found a locked door. After breaking it to enter the building, they found the computers that were, allegedly, rigged for gambling, next to notes with names and phone numbers of people believed to be customers.
Furthermore, €4,950 and a disc containing data from the video surveillance system of the building were confiscated. Twenty-nine people were also identified outside the club and, most of them admitted to having gambled with the computers.
The Police stated that the illegal gambling activities were not conducted by the management of the Appolon. Instead, the people responsible for the set up are those who rented the building from the club.
