Gary Law, Game Product Owner at Relax Gaming explains how smart maths revolutionised the company’s Dream Drop Jackpot.

Exclusive interview.- In the following exclusive interview with Focus Gaming News, Gary Law, game product owner at Relax Gaming, explains why strong maths models are the backbone of successful online slots, and how jackpot dynamics, player psychology and design all align to shape unforgettable gaming experiences.

Can you start by explaining just how important a strong maths model is to a successful online slot?

Creating an effective mathematical model for a game involves identifying its most enjoyable elements and highlighting those features. While it’s tempting to add numerous features to a game, if they don’t contribute meaningfully to the experience, the game could become unenjoyable.

A well-designed game incorporating solid mathematical principles will offer more moments filled with high potential, a characteristic of some of the greatest games.

Many people say that good maths is the most important element of any slot, even when compared to the game’s features, mechanics and design, would you agree?

Math is essential, although I am, of course, very biased. It’s important to remember that players have a wide range of preferences and are often seeking different experiences from a game. While many players primarily look for excitement and strong potential in a game, others may desire a more relaxing experience or want to explore something new.

Therefore, it’s crucial to consider all elements of game design and to have a diverse array of ideas. However, it’s clear that every great game benefits from a solid math model, so we must invest considerable effort into developing that aspect.

How does the maths differ when developing a jackpot product in comparison to a standard game?

The approach we take really depends on the specific game. Since there are so many different types, each player has unique expectations. However, it’s fair to say that when substantial jackpots are available, we focus more on creating a reliable winning experience between those jackpot opportunities.

Can you tell us more about ‘Super Hot’ periods and the increase in prize drops and how this has been achieved?

The Mega and Major jackpots are guaranteed to be won when they reach a specific value, and the soon-to-be-released daily jackpots are available at a set time. This means that the likelihood of winning increases as you approach either the value or the time. We label these jackpots as “superhot” when they get close to the threshold where they will likely be won soon.

Taking a step back from mathematics, what’s your favourite Dream Drop Jackpot game, and why is it number one for you?

I’m a big fan of Bill and Coin Dream Drop. The game is straightforward yet provides plenty of excitement. The extra wheel in the Dream Drop bonus is a fantastic addition. It’s exhilarating to align the two wheels, and the wild segments create a nice enhancement. I think it represents a significant improvement over our current wheel bonus.
