The KSA has issued warnings to the Netherlands’ new igaming operators after it found gambling ads on a Donald Duck website.
The Netherlands.- The Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has warned online gambling licensees to improve the targeting of online advertising following a backlash from the public and politicians.
It’s warned all 12 licence holders to “pay special attention” to ensure gambling ads are not seen by “vulnerable people such as minors and young adults”.
The move comes as MPs push the Netherlands’ new minister for legal protection Franc Weerwind for a ban on untargeted gambling adverts to stem what they describe as a “barrage” of advertising since the regulated online market when live at the start of October.
Weerwind has said that he needs more time to study the legality of a possible ban and stressed that some advertising was necessary.
The Netherland’s existing legislation prohibits gaming operators from showing ads before 9pm and in media that appeals mainly to people aged under 25. Ads must also carry a safer gambling message.
However, in an advertising sweep, the KSA found that three operators had displayed advertisements on a “Donald Duck website“, a teen-oriented YouTube channel called TeenTok and during the family TV show Marble Mania.
The regulator says it has demanded that the operators involved demonstrate that they have adjusted their advertising policies. It said it has also demanded action from seven other operators that were found to have committed less serious breeches.
The KSA said: “The KSA keeps a close eye on advertising by gambling providers and takes enforcement action where necessary. New providers can also look forward to such treatment. Fines are not ruled out if violations are found.”
