Dutch gambling regulator issues warning over early payouts
The KSA says some operators were providing incomplete information about the sports betting option.
The Netherlands.- The Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has another mechanic in its sights. A week after urging operators to remove “share your bet” buttons and links, it’s now concerned about the promotion of “early payout” features.
The regulator said it has contacted several online sports betting providers regarding incomplete information about the feature, which allows a bet to be considered won before a match has ended. This feature is not available in the event of a draw, and the KSA says that several providers have failed to communicate this sufficiently, making it appear as if players could also use the option for draws.
What is early payout?
Early Payout features offered by some betting operators allows players to declare their bet a winner if their team has a two-goal lead during the match, regardless of the final result. The odds for Early Payout bets are lower than the odds for regular bets, allowing players to decide to claim a certain but lower payout before the final whistle
For the KSA, the problem arises when the option is communicated in a way that makes it appear like it could be offered for draw bets there is no team with a lead.
“The providers’ terms and conditions state that early payouts are not possible for draws, but this isn’t always clearly communicated when placing the bet,” The KSA said. “This creates confusion among players, who may assume that early payouts also apply to draws.
“Providers are required to provide clear and understandable information about the possible outcomes of a bet, including the associated terms and conditions. The KSA determined that providers were not complying with this obligation when providing information about the ‘early payout’ feature. Providers that offer this feature have been contacted and have improved their communication so that players are now more clearly informed about the limitations of early payout for bets on draws.”
