The Netherlands.- Police in the Netherlands have reportedly questioned the former Dutch international football players Dirk Kuyt and Wesley Sneijder as witnesses in a case against a gambling site allegedly connected to an organisation run by criminal godfather Piet S.

Police are reported to believe that Kuyt and Sneijder placed bets on the former site Edobet. Netherland’s Public Prosecution Service claims the site was created by Piet S’s son, Freddy S. The players are said to have been interviewed in January and February respectively.

Officers are said to have found messages naming the players on EncroChat, an encrypted communications network previously used by criminal organisations until it was infiltrated.

Messages discovered on the platform allegedly refer to the players’ betting habits and Sneijder’s failure to pay debts.

According to NOS, one message read: “We are no longer going to ask for money, just have them kicked into the hospital first. May also be a female, as long as it is someone from that family. His mother, aunt, grandmother, I don’t care who.”

The alleged incidents took place before the legalisation of online gaming in the Netherlands this year. Regulated igaming went live in the country on October 2 after a glitch with the self-exclusion system, Cruks.
