Connecticut reports decrease in casino revenue
The opening of the new MGM casino in Massachusetts has affected revenue in Connecticut facilities.
US.- Connecticut casinos suffered a decrease in revenues during October’s operations, but the numbers aren’t surprising as it was expected an economic impact from the opening of MGM Springfield, across the state line in Massachusetts.
The Foxwoods Resort Casino reported a 10% decline in slot-machine revenue in October to US$34.4 million. This figure follows a 5% decline in September. While Mohegan Sun hasn’t reported its figures yet, it recorded a 9% decrease in September. Both tribes that run the facilities have asked authorities to let them open a casino in the northern part of Connecticut in order to compete with MGM.
“With MGM Springfield in its first few months of operation, not only did we expect to see an impact, we’ve also consistently and publicly communicated our expectations over the last three years while proactively working toward mitigating any potential loss in revenue,” the casino said in a written statement provided by spokesman Adam Jalbert. “We are pleased to say that, despite the temporary decline in October, our business volume and gaming activity still continues to exceed our expectations.”
