Companies interested in US sports betting
Verizon is the latest company to show interest in operating sports betting services in the US.
US.- A legal sports betting industry could become a reality throughout the United States, as the federal Supreme Court is near to releasing a resolution that would determine whether the gaming modality will be allowed or not. Meanwhile, major companies such as Verizon have begun to show their interest in investing in the industry.
“There are some changes coming that we pay attention to. We stay close to that to see how it would affect our asset and how we may choose to respond,” Verizon Chief Financial Officer Matt Ellis said in an interview on Tuesday. “I’ve not looked at anything in detail,” he continued. “If someone has an idea around it, I’ll look at it like any other. But we are not getting ahead of ourselves there.”
According to Bloomberg, Verizon – the current operator of Yahoo sports fantasy platform – “has been meeting with experts and consultants to assess the potential for a sports-focused online gambling venture if the laws in the U.S. change.”
Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana are currently the only four states able to operate sports betting. During PASPA’s drafting (a sports protection Act), the four administrations were granted special legislative exemptions, as all four of those states were offering some variation of sports betting/lotteries back in 1992. The government of New Jersey has approached the US Supreme Court with a legal battle to amend PASPA to legalise sports betting at a federal level.
