Historic church to be relocated to make room for MGM Casino
The church lays on the soon-to be MGM Springfield casino’s gambling floor and construction crews started to move it on Tuesday.
US.- The MGM Springfield casino is fulfilling its historical preservation commitment to the city of Springfield in Massachusetts.
Yesterday (Tuesday) construction crews started moving the 129-year-old First Spiritualist Church about two football field lengths to make way for the city’s new casino. These crews have spent several weeks hoisting the church and placing it on a sophisticated array of wheels that will inch the building to its new location within the next three days.
The High Victorian Gothic brick church was originally known as the French Protestant Church but has been known as the First Spiritualist Church since its name was changed in 1919. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.
