British Columbia wagers $25m in two months of single-event sports betting
The National Football League (NFL) was the most popular betting choice in the Canadian province.
Canada.- the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has reported that bettors wagered over $25m on single-event sports betting in the first two months after its launch in Canada. The National Football League (NFL) was the top betting choice with the number of wagers in its first seven weeks up 97 per cent year-on-year.
The top betting event was the week-four NFL game between Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, where 69 per cent of bets and 80 per cent of money wagered were on single-event bets. The BCLC takes single-event sports bets via the PlayNow.com platform.
Lynda Cavanaugh, BCLC’s interim president, and CEO said: “This is a significant milestone for BCLC that demonstrates further how PlayNow.com is well-positioned to provide highly entertaining and engaging sports betting in a safe and secure environment.”
“It’s important for players to know that playing with BCLC supports the success of British Columbia, as PlayNow.com is the only legal gambling website from which revenue supports important provincial initiatives, including healthcare and education.”
Bill C-218 was introduced in the Candian parliament in November 2020. It passed the Senate in June by a vote of 57-20 and received Royal Assent a week later. However, the bill has to be implemented by each Canadian province.
