British bases deny objections to Cyprus casino

Multiple reports said that British bases raised concerns around the Zakaki casino resort in Cyprus.

Cyprus.- After multiple reports saying that British bases were against the Zakaki casino resort on environmental grounds, they said that they have no jurisdiction in areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

“We did hold discussions with the Republic of Cyprus department of the environment and the game fund on this issue in late March,” a statement said, and added that the department asked the bases to discuss the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which had been prepared, to take account of the special areas of conservation and special protection areas, Cyprus Mail Online reported.

“These were designated within the SBAs following a rigorous consultation process based on science, involving all stakeholders. As requested, the Bases provided comment in April, solely on what further areas the EIA might consider,” added the report.

Politis said that the two companies that carried out the impact study on behalf of Melco – Pro Plan Ltd and Envi Services – had sent a letter to the department of the environment of Cyprus suggesting that the bases highlighted an area for special protection had to do with military interests.
