Brazil to change sports betting draft
After a public consultation, Brazil will modify three points of the sports betting bill to legalise the segment in the country.
Brazil.– In the coming weeks, lawmakers in Brazil will correct the sports betting bill. Therefore, after receiving 2,644 contributions in a public consultation, the Ministry of Economy considers that they must change three points.
The public consultation process ended last Sunday. Now, lawmakers will work on the answers and correct certain regulations. As reported, taxes, international sites blocking measures and betting markets will be modified.
In addition, the public consultation revealed that experts in the sports betting market believe that international sites operating today in Brazil should be blocked. They also propose that taxes should come from bookmakers’ income, not the prize pool.
Declarations
“So far, it seems to us that the proposed model has been well accepted. But we should clarify how a series of articles are written,” said Alexandre Manoel Angelo da Silva, national secretary of public policy evaluation, planning, energy and lottery at the Ministry of Economy.
“We will make internal corrections in two or three weeks,” he added as Brazil pushes for sports betting legalisation.
“Another point is the criminalisation in Brazil of illegal sports betting sites and for those who participate in the manipulation of results. The government project provides for prison sentences of one to five years for those who operate without a license. People who participate in organised results can spend two to eight years in prison. Both would also pay a fine, ”he concluded.
